Master of Social Work
Our Master of Social Work program is fully accredited by Council of Social Work Education and committed to prepare students with advanced generalist and specialized competencies to empower vulnerable populations in rural and urban communities locally, nationally, and globally. We offer three program tracks (advanced standing program, traditional 2 year program and 3 years+ part time programs) with two concentrations (Family and Child Welfare and Community Mental Health) and Lawson State Community College campus option.
About This Program
Grounded in the core values and ethics of the social work profession, the mission of the MSW Program at À¶Ý®ÊÓƵ is to prepare students with advanced generalist and specialized competencies to promote human and community well-being, demonstrate respect for human diversity, engage in scientific inquiry and global anti-racist, anti-oppressive practices guided by the Ecological Perspective, Problem Solving Model and Empowerment Perspective (EPPSE). Additionally, the program is designed to prepare students to advance human rights and promote social, racial, economic, and environmental justice in rural, urban, local, national, and global communities.
Concentrations
The M.S.W. curriculum is offered in two concentrations: Family & Child Welfare and Community Mental Health.
Family & Child Welfare
The Family and Child Welfare Concentration prepares students to demonstrate specialized mastery of core social work competencies as they are applied to social work practice in Family and Child Welfare. Through classroom and field experiences, students gain enhanced knowledge, values and skills to engage, assess, intervene and evaluate social work practice in family and child welfare settings. Graduates with specialized competencies in family and child welfare are prepared to engage in service provision to children, adolescents and families in a variety of settings to include foster care and adoptions, protective services, family drug court, protective services and juvenile detention.
Community Mental Health
The Community Mental Health Concentration prepares students to demonstrate specialized mastery of core social work competencies as they are applied to social work practice in Community Mental Health. Through classroom and field experiences, students gain enhanced knowledge, values and skills to engage, assess, intervene and evaluate social work practice in Community Mental Health settings. Graduates with specialized competencies in community mental health are prepared to assume employment in a variety of inpatient and outpatient psychiatric settings with a variety of patient populations. Graduates are prepared to engage in service provision to veterans, children, adolescents, persons with chronic mental illness, and persons who are addicted to substances in community mental health clinics, hospitals and treatment facilities.
Career Fields
The M.S.W. is a versatile degree. Persons with an M.S.W. may engage in direct practice in various settings, teach, or serve as consultants and evaluators in the field of social work. Licensed Independent Clinical Social Workers (LICSW) may practice independently.
